Come 30 July 2020 at 7.50am EDT (4.50am PDT), NASA intends to embark on its Mars 2020 mission with Perseverance, its fifth Mars rover, via the Atlas V rocket to look for evidence of ancient life. The launch is expected to last for about three weeks until 15 August, with new windows of opportunity for takeoff opening every five minutes daily.
Debuting alongside the Perseverance rover will be the new Mars 2020 visual identity, commissioned by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to multidisciplinary designer Tobias van Schneider’s studio House of van Schneider.
According to the firm, NASA emphasized for the new logo to illustrate “the energy and legacy of space travel” while honoring the engineers who have worked behind the scenes to make the expedition a reality.
The abstract symbol is a neat distillation of a complex vision that humankind once thought was just a dream. The simple logo sees the rover in 2D form, with its recognizable structure, rocketeering to the Red Planet, with Planet Earth in the distance.
The emblem is refreshingly pared back yet striking and timeless, allowing it to stand out “beautifully on the rover as it does on a 191-foot-tall rocket ship,” the design studio commented.
Reflecting on the aspiring project, the studio described of it as a “‘bucket list’-worthy” endeavor.
The Perseverance rover is scheduled to land on Mars on 18 February 2021. You can watch the liftoff live here.

Thankful for the JPL & NASA teams who put so much trust in us and gave us this opportunity. It's a small & big project. Definitely a bucket list item crossed off.

And incredibly thankful to the HOVS team (our design studio). I love working with you!
