Candidates on former vice president Joe Biden’s list of running mates were reportedly asked what sort of nickname Trump would give them if they were given the gig.
The Washington Post detailed a behind-the-scenes story about the vetting process to become Biden’s running mate, and one of the questions that was specifically tailored to the 2020 election was, “What do you think Donald Trump’s nickname for you would be?”
The Wall Street Journal reported that these candidates were asked the question by Biden’s search committee as part of the vetting process. Biden then stepped forward and interviewed 11 finalists during the last nine days of the process. His team vetted over 20 candidates over a three-month span, before he decided on Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate.
When Biden was asked about the search process during their first joint appearance, he said he approached the effort “with a seriousness of mind and purpose.”
“The choice we make this November is going to decide the future of America for a very long time,” he said. “But I have no doubt the right person to join me as the next vice president is Senator Kamala Harris.” Biden described Harris as “smart, tough, experienced and a proven fighter.”
During the vetting process, Biden’s campaign officials told WSJ that Harris expressed confidence in challenging Trump, who has a reputation for using nicknames and insults to attack his opponents.
Some of the insults that Trump uttered were “Little Marco” and “Crooked Hillary.” He also has labeled Biden as “Sleepy Joe.”
Trump was quick to criticized Harris after she was announced as Biden’s running mate last Tuesday. The president labeled her a “sort of a mad woman” during an interview with Fox Business. The Washington Post also reported that Harris managed to impress Biden by showcasing her ability to deflect attacks made by Trump, and continue to focus on the political issues.
