The Emmys This Year Was Excruciatingly Awkward For Nominees Who Lost

Each year, nominees of the Emmy Awards would have their speech and composure put together in the moments ahead of an announcement of their category. If they lost, they’d have a gracious face on and clap for the winner. While putting on such airs for the glamorous affair wasn’t necessary at 2020’s Emmys, where attendees socially distanced at home due to the COVID-19 crisis, things weren’t any less awkward for nominees who lost this year.
Presenters in tuxedo hazmat suits—designed by Katja Cahill and executive producer Guy Carrington—were parked outside each nominee’s home to hand them their award on the off chance that they won, according to Variety.
Comedian Ramy Youssef was among the nominees in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series category for Ramy Unfortunately for him, he lost to Schitt’s Creek’s Eugene Levy. His recording of how the unusual prize-giving ceremony played out, which he shared on Twitter, proved that the rejection was a particular gut punch to non-prizewinners—albeit a priceless moment for spectators—this year.
In Youssef’s video, a figure in a hazmat suit was captured standing outside his glass door—with victory being just a whiff away as you could see the statue up close in his hand. Alas, things were not meant to be as the presenter raised his free hand and waved goodbye to occupants of the home.
Nevertheless, Youssef saw the light in this bleak situation and uploaded the scene for all to enjoy. In viewers’ eyes, he was the winner.
