IKEA Russia has released an important advertisement to encourage viewers to be more mindful of waste this Christmas season.
There’s always the temptation to be wasteful after indulging in good food during the festive season. To encourage people not to be careless in their behavior, the flatpack company’s latest spot shows just what happens if you discard your excess food carelessly instead of properly storing it in containers.
Directed by Great Guns’ Ilya Naishuller, the ad begins with a young boy playing in the snow, surrounded by Christmas trees and beautiful lights. While playing, he suddenly notices a giant pineapple falling from the sky, crushing a nearby snowman.
A variety of food terrorizes the neighborhood, including Swiss cheese and a tangerine the size of a car. The boy begins to run and dodge these festive foods, with the iconic Christmas song Carol of the Bells playing in the background.
Upon reaching home, he notices his mother discarding the leftovers from their Christmas dinner, oblivious to the destruction outside. After looking out of the window, she decides to pack their excess food into containers.
The commercial concludes with a voiceover that says, “What if nature returns everything we throw away during the holidays? Don’t let your celebrations go to waste.”
Speaking about the spot, Naishuller said, “The idea for this spot was to provoke the viewer to question how much they really need to cook and to look into saving food via IKEA’s affordable plastic containers.”
“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to make something fun and enjoyable for the viewer that also has potential to make a little bit of a positive change,” he continued.
