An unconfirmed Freudian theory likens McDonald’s famous Golden Arches to a woman’s breasts, but little do people know that the logo was also the defining look of 90s hairstyles.
Remember the fringe rocked by the likes of David Beckham, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Aaron Carter some 30 years ago? Trace around it, and you get the Golden Arches. The A-lister look is now making a comeback, and McDonald’s is hoping to rightfully claim it.
To welcome the return of the retro middle part, McDonald’s Sweden and advertising agency NORD DDB have opened The Golden M Barber Shop, “the first-ever official McDonald’s hair salon,” to help fans achieve ‘The Golden M’ haircuts.
“When we realized that people were wearing our Golden Arches, we had to act. We started the M Barber Shop not only to guard our Golden M, but also to claim it once and for all,” explained Staffan Ekstam, Marketing Director at McDonald’s Sweden, in a press release. “The salon is a celebration dedicated to our beloved ambassadors – a helping hand to guide them on how to keep their M’s in perfect trim, even when we can’t move around as freely as we usually can.”
In compliance with COVID-19 social distancing regulations, the Stockholm salon was only open for online appointments. Customers could book a session with hairstylist Adam Lukacs, who would teach them how to perfect the Golden Arches look remotely. While other requests were accepted, the ‘Golden M’ was the only official haircut on the menu.
The barber shop was fully booked within two hours, making it more likely for the McDonald’s logo to appear everywhere you go.
For those who couldn’t get an appointment in time, McDonald’s Sweden has kindly released a tutorial so you can capture that celebrity look on your own.
To double-down support for the M-shaped haircut, McDonald’s Sweden also created an AI ‘Golden M Detector’ that grants a free Big Mac to anyone sporting the hairdo. The tool is trained with thousands of hairstyle photos and uses machine learning to recognize the ‘Golden M’ on faces.
