Casual fashion brand UNIQLO and the prestigious Louvre museum, two unexpected allies, have struck up a four-year partnership to release T-shirts adorned with masterpieces of the world-famous art establishment.
The first phase of their apparel collection features UT T-shirts and sweaters with remixed graphical treatments of artworks like the Mona Lisa.
The menswear side is helmed by art director Peter Saville, renowned for his album cover art from the 80s such as the covers for Joy Division and New Order. Saville drew upon the inventory number system central to museums’ cataloging process. “Little known to the general public, inventory numbers are essential for museums, not only because they allow the identification of an object in the museum’s collections, but they also bear witness to the institution’s acquisition policy,” the Louvre museum explained in a press release.
The women’s tees bear different pieces of art, spotlighting sculptures of femininity to uplift the diverse female form around the world.
In the upcoming years, UNIQLO will also back the Louvre museum’s free-admission nights, which have been taking place on the first Saturday night of each month.
“I am honored and excited to be partnering with the world-renowned Musée du Louvre. This is a longtime dream come true,” described Tadashi Yanai, CEO of UNIQLO parent Fast Retailing. “UNIQLO has done much to date to share the pleasure of art with the general public, especially in keeping with our commitment to LifeWear, which is clothing designed to help make everyone’s daily life better. We hope that our partnership with the museum can enable as many people as possible to experience and appreciate the universal beauty of the masterworks in its collection.”
The first lineup from this partnership will be available online and in stores on 8 February 2021. UNIQLO will add more pieces to this beautiful range until 2024.
