Daft Punk, the French electronic music duo, is officially disbanding. While the news might leave you devastated, it is somewhat comforting to know that the members are going out with a literal bang.
The duo released a video titled Epilogue that sees the pair walking side by side in the desert. One of them then takes off his leather jacket to reveal a detonation device, which was strapped to his back.
His bandmate then presses a button before walking away to explode. A title card reading, “1993-2021,” appears.
According to Dazed Digital, Daft Punk’s publicist Katheryn Frazier has confirmed that the video is meant to announce the band’s disbandment.
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo first met in school in Paris in 1987 and formed an indie rock band named Darlin’. After negative reviews, they changed their moniker to Daft Punk and released their first single, Da Funk, in 1995.
As Daft Punk, they received six Grammy Awards and have managed to call themselves pioneers of the house scene in France.
