The alluring world of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is getting a fresh lick of (likely gold) paint through animation, according to a report by the Hollywood Reporter.
An animated adaptation of the novel is currently in development by way of filmmaker William Joyce and animators of VFX house DNEG, which helped produce Tenet.
Joyce described that animation will help open up a world of creative freedom as colorful as the author’s prose.
“[Fitzgerald] created a vivid dreamscape that, to some degree, has eluded filmmakers since the silent era,” Joyce described. “The previous film versions were constrained by live-action, but innovative animation could finally realize the elusive quality of the novel.”
The story was propelled to the modern era with the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring film adaptation in 2013. Incidentally, the novel entered the public domain this year, allowing anyone to reproduce or reinterpret the 1925 Fitzgerald tale without any copyright-related repercussions.
The upcoming adaptation will be written by Brian Selznick. Michael Siegel and David Prescott, senior VP of creative production at DNEG, will join Joyce to produce the animated feature. The film will also get some of its movie magic from virtual production techniques.
