Studio Ghibli’s animated film Spirited Away will be adapted for stageplay next year. The stage production of the film will have its world premiere in Tokyo in February 2022, and will later make its way to Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Nagoya.
The play will be produced by Japanese production company Toho Co., while British stage director John Caird will be in charge of adapting and directing the production.
“I feel so excited and privileged to be working on the first ever stage production of Spirited Away,” Caird told IndieWire. “I have regarded Hayao Miyazaki as one of the preeminent geniuses of world cinema and the greatest ever proponent of the anime form.”
Studio Ghibli’s lead producer Toshio Suzuki said he and Miyazaki have agreed to work with Caird because they like Caird’s vision and trust his creative direction.
For the lead role in the stage production, the British director has already double-casted actresses Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi to play the protagonist, Chihiro.
Spirited Away centers on Chihiro, a 10-year old whose family gets lost in a mysterious world of spirits that is ruled by a sorceress Yubaba, who turns Chihiro’s parents into pigs. Chihiro finds herself meeting with various obstacles and using her wits to survive and return to the human world.
