Google has unveiled its second-generation Nest Hub, a smart display and speaker that is capable of tracking your sleep via a built-in radar sensor.
The Nest Hub 2 has a seven-inch screen that you can use to stream video, check the weather, get alerts, turn on the lights, and more. Although it looks similar to the first model, the newer edition has better speakers offering 50-percent more bass than the first one.
The biggest change to the Google Nest Hub is the inclusion of Soli radar technology, which is incorporated in the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones. It allows users to make hand movements in front of the phone to play, pause and skip through music tracks and adjust the volume.
When it comes to the Google Nest Hub 2, it has two functions. With Quick Gestures enabled, you can play and pause music and videos just by waving your hand in front of the device, it can also be used for Motion Sensing, which monitors your breathing and movements while you’re asleep.
Users can place the new Nest Hub near where they sleep, and it will guide them through a setup process for ‘Sleep Sensing’. This process helps line the radar up with where you sleep in bed.
According to Google, it can measure micromovements, such as chest movements in breathing, to see when you’re sleeping. Microphones in the device can detect if you are snoring or coughing, and other built-in sensors can determine the bedroom’s temperature and the brightness of lights.
With all of the information, the Nest Hub will determine how well you have slept and then make recommendations—setting a reminder for you to go to bed at certain timings to improve sleep consistency, or an alert to meditate with a wind-down routine before bedtime.
The Google Nest Hub 2 comes in four colors: chalk; charcoal; sand; and mist, a soft pastel blue. The smart display is also covered in fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.
The Google Nest Hub 2 will go on sale on March 31 in the US, UK, and Australia, and can be pre-ordered now.
