With her poetic songwriting style, some might classify Lana Del Rey as an old soul. Her design preferences, on the other hand, might incite a different response.
On Tuesday, the singer announced that her new album, Blue Banisters, would be available from July 4. The news arrived with the album’s cover art, which depicts a selfie of Del Rey in a warm filter and surrounded by white illustration-style borders, along with a dark blue script font. The aesthetic is… a choice.
Here’s the original selfie:
Insider reports that fans couldn’t help but liken the image, as well as some of the singer’s other artworks, to something created from PicsArt, a simple photo-editing app that allows users to jazz up pictures with stickers, text, and effects.
The jokes on social media continued to escalate to the point that both “Lana” and “PicsArt” terms became top trends on Twitter.
Then it got even more bizarre. Shortly after the announcement of Del Rey’s album, a petition was launched on Change.org to “ban Lana from PicsArt.”
“Lana had terrorized just way too long with these edits,” the petition’s creator wrote in the petition’s description. “We need to stop her. Sign this for a future of quality album covers from Lana again.”
As of time of publishing, the page has amassed nearly 4,000 signatures, which is pretty close to its goal of 5,000 supporters. At this tier, its creator says they will start getting “in contact with Lana’s art team, AKA Lana, and we will discuss this discussion together.”
