Carole Baskin, of Netflix’s Tiger King fame, has launched her own cryptocurrency, and says an NFT collection is on the way. And you might wish this was a joke, but her new digital currency is named ‘$CAT’.
Unlike Bitcoin or Ether, $CAT has been described as more of a “fan token” that allows fans to purchase merchandise or online experiences from Baskin’s Big Cat Rescue animal sanctuary. The cryptocurrency currently is for sale, starting at US$5.
“Imagine a virtually connected world where people who love big cats can join with others and share access to the augmented reality ARzoo and the virtual reality game Big Cat Rescue VR and can collect all their favorite exotic cats, past and present,” part of its description reads.
It does caution potential buyers, however, that $CAT “is not, in any way, an investment.” Instead, its only value is “in the purr-ks of showing your pride in Big Cat Rescue and being a part of our vibrant community.”
Baskin isn’t just stopping at creating her own cryptocurrency. According to CNET, Big Cat Rescue says it will be launching non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the coming weeks, though details of those are currently scarce.
