Impossible Foods has recently secured Child Nutrition Labels for its Impossible Burger range in the US, meaning it’s now eligible to be part of school nutrition programs.
The labels are voluntary food crediting statements authorized by the USDA, allowing schools to determine how much a particular food contributes to nutritionally balanced meals for children.
USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services evaluated the plant-based burger’s product formulation, as well as the company’s quality control and manufacturing procedures, before awarding it with the label.
Now, according to Engadget, Impossible Foods will be launching K-12 pilot programs within several school districts, including the Palo Alto Unified School District in California, the Aberdeen School District in Washington, the Deer Creek Public Schools in Edmond, Oklahoma, and the Union City Public Schools in Union City, Oklahoma.
These schools will be testing out Impossible’s plant-based meat in a variety of dishes on their menus, including tacos, pies, and pasta with Impossible’s meat sauce.
“We are thrilled to be partnering with K-12 school districts across the country to lower barriers to access our plant-based meat for this change-making generation,” said Impossible Foods CEO Pat Brown.
By making its plant-based meat available in schools, the company hopes to win over younger taste buds. The participating schools will also survey the children to understand if offering Impossible products at lunchtime will be a positive addition to the schools’ lunch programs.
“Kids provide an enormous and largely unexplored opportunity for environmental progress,” said Jessica Appelgren, Vice-President of Communications at Impossible Foods.
