David Hockney Shares Early Pieces From His Sketchbook Before They Were Exhibited

English painter David Hockney, whose 1972 Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) holds the record for most expensive artwork by a living artist to be sold at auction, gives art lovers a rare and intimate look at his early sketches before they were showcased at the National Portrait Gallery in a video recently uncovered by Open Culture.
Flipping through his sketchbook page by page, Hockney reveals the sketches and watercolor work that came to be some of his 150 artworks at the 2020 Drawing from Life exhibition.
Due to the pandemic, unfortunately, the showcase only ran for a few weeks.
Hockney’s contemplative pieces might strike a chord, especially during the pandemic, as they often explore meaning in people-free surroundings and tend towards creating a relationship with the viewer rather than subjects in a painting.
