illycaffè has teamed up with world-renowned Ai Weiwei for a reimagined version of its art cups.
The illy Art Collection by Ai Weiwei was inspired by Ai’s famed
Coloured Vases, created in 2006. Using a process of appropriation and destruction, the artist dunked Neolithic vases in industrial paint tins, reshaping the look and functionality.
Now, he’s recreated the design, but with coffee cups.
Making use of a familiar object, Ai’s latest work invites coffee drinkers to explore their “position” and perspective, even just for the time it takes to enjoy a cup of coffee.
“I am very happy to be a part of illy Art Collection. I think it is very important to give power to art and design while drinking good coffee, because it affects everybody’s life. We should enjoy it,” said Ai.
The collection will be available this month in four different formats: four espresso cups, four cappuccino cups, two espresso cups, and two cappuccino cups.
