Amazon’s contactless physical stores are an unintentional solution for the COVID-19 era, and, naturally, the tech behemoth has decided to replicate this recipe multifold with its first full-size grocery store.
The new Amazon Fresh location, opening this week at Factoria Square Mall in Bellevue, Washington, will be powered with the same Just Walk Out technology deployed in smaller, existing stores. Essentially, customers can skip the checkout process by picking up items from shelves, automatically adding products to their virtual carts, and scanning their palms or payment cards before exiting.
Visitors can grab fresh picks of fruits and vegetables, meat, seafood, prepared foods, and baked goods from the grocery store, which will also be open for package pickups and returns.
According to Amazon, Just Walk Out is a culmination of deep-learning, computer vision and sensor fusion. Customers can simply grab and go from stores as their virtual carts are synced with their Amazon accounts or credit cards at entry to track purchases. If they change their mind about an item, they can return it to the shelf without being charged.
Sticklers for tradition can opt for a typical checkout process, as cashiers are also available to ring purchases up.
Starting June 17, Amazon Fresh Bellevue will be open daily from 7am to 10pm PT.
