Have you ever dreamed of creating your own food artwork worthy of those in Studio Ghibli films? Japanese illustrator and media creator Tainosuki has been illustrating delectable foods to incredible effect—all with Adobe Fresco, a free painting app for the iPad.
The artworks are so believable, you could almost reach into the desserts with a fork. What gives them away are the schools of fish that the artist delights in adding in.
While it’s not realistic to pick up Tainosuki’s technique overnight, the artist has shared his illustration process through video tutorials with Adobe Creative Cloud to help you get started. His digital drawings comprise three key steps: there’s a rough sketch created with the pencil tool, base paint to set the tone of the image, and the final touches of shading and texture.
In these videos, Tainosuki adopts the use of the watercolor wet spatter brush to recreate the spongy textures of cake.
The artist has one final nugget of wisdom for creatives hoping to perfect their shading: he says that “the key to drawing a realistic illustration is to not use pure white when drawing [highlights].”
