Titane, a French film directed by Julia Ducournau, has just won Cannes Film Festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
The narrative follows the life of a young woman who survives a car crash in childhood, which alters her relationships to cars later in life.
After undergoing brain surgery following the crash, she ignores her family who’s there to greet her, instead walking directly to the car, which she hugs and kisses. As the film progresses, she becomes impregnated by a car – yes, you read that right.
That’s not all. As per Jalopnik, partway through the film, the young woman adopts a male gender, passing herself as a boy who was reported missing. There’s also a significant amount of blood and gore; it’s a sci-fi horror film, after all.
If you’re looking for an internationally acclaimed film that’s divided critics with its incredibly outlandish plot, Titane could be for you. Take a look at the trailer below.
