Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has officially overtaken Apple as the world’s second-largest smartphone maker, ranking just behind South Korea’s Samsung.
According to a new report by technology market analytics firm Canalys, the second quarter of 2021 saw a 12% increase in global smartphone shipments, with Samsung leading the charge with 19% of the market. Xiaomi came in second with 17%, followed by Apple with 14%.
The Chinese smartphone manufacturer’s shipment increased by a whopping 83% in the last quarter, with it making headway into Latin America, Africa, and Western Europe. As per CNET, its fellow Chinese counterpart, Huawei, has dropped out of the top five rankings, following its security dispute with the US Federal Communications Commission last year.
“Xiaomi is growing its overseas business rapidly. For example, its shipments increased more than 300% in Latin America, 150% in Africa, and 50% in Western Europe,” said Canalys Research Manager Ben Stanton.
“A major priority for Xiaomi this year is to grow sales of its high-end devices, such as the Mi 11 Ultra.”
