“These boots are made from coffee!” explains the XpreSole Panto campaign. It wasn’t lying: almost every single component of these new kicks involve coffee in some manner.
Joining mushroomand apple leathers in our lineup of sustainable and animal-free materials, eco-friendly shoe company CCILU is now innovating waste from coffee. The insole is made with coffee yarn, the lining with coffee-infused fabric, and the shell and outsole from spent coffee grounds.
Every pair of these shoes upcycles 15 cups worth of used coffee grounds, the website writes. Integrating this in the design reduces spent coffee grounds (SCG). They’re dehumidified, ground, then pelletized. These master batches are then sent to be transformed into fabrics utilized in the shoes.
“With 850 billion cups of coffee poured each year, the human being creates 25 billion kilos of the SCG,” explains CCILU Founder and CEO, Wilson Hsu in a news release. This has a tremendous effect on the environment, considering CO2’s already concerning impact, and the fact that methane can be up to 28 times more harmful.
The boots have a lot to brag about. They’re waterproof, dirtproof, quick-dry, anti-odor, have great grip, are anti-microbial, and they’re machine-washable. They weigh just 230g (8.1oz), about a third of the weight of regular boots, and are suitable for walking, hiking, indoors, outdoors, you name it.
And, the XpreSole has already been honored at the 2021 Red Dot Design Awards, deemed ‘Best of the Best’. Its Kickstarter goal of US$10,000 has been exceed five times over. It’s safe to say that consumers have given this project an overwhelmingly positive “go for it!”
