For the first time in 15 years, a member of Batman’s immediate circle has publicly identified as LGBTQ+. Following Batwoman’s coming out as gay in 2006, the latest issue of Batman: Urban Legends confirms Tim Drake’s Robin as bisexual.
In the synopsis, DC Comics teased that Tim Drake would finally “hear something about himself he never knew,” sparking a “brand-new chapter” of his life. “You won’t want to miss it!” the company continued.
Fans have since discovered that this hints at the Boy Wonder’s exploration with his sexual identity. In Batman: Urban Legends #6, he goes out for dinner with his old friend Bernard, and while it’s just dinner to Tim, Bernard perceives it as a date. The revelation creates a sort of “lightbulb moment” for Robin, says UNILAD, and he agrees to go on an official next date with his mate.
The writer of the story, Meghan Fitzmartin, shared with Polygon that when approached to create another piece for the DC world, she was “thrilled.” She then told editor Dave Wielgosz that “this is the story, because it’s the only story it can be.”
Fitzmartin stressed that Tim’s coming-out story doesn’t erase his past romances. Rather, “sexuality is a journey.” She reassured that “his feelings for Stephanie have been/are 100% real, as are his feelings for Bernard.”
“Tim is still figuring himself out,” she concluded. “I don’t think he has the language for it all… yet.”
