Don’t cringe when you look back at your old artwork—it’s probably just one click away from becoming a high-banking masterpiece. Take, for example, this handwritten, MS Paint-esque piece that just went off the market for US$270,000.
Entitled Testing Test 123 #1, the scribbling of the word “Test” against a plain white background looks as if it was created by whoever designed the city of LA’s graphic designer job advertisement.
In truth, the note was written by cryptocurrency trading marketplace FTX’s CEO Sam Bankman-Fried as part of a trial for its custom NFT support. The platform just decided to sell it off, and it somehow managed to fetch a six-figure sum.
To be fair, people have paid upwards of US$600,000 for free clipart, so the transaction of this one-of-a-kind piece isn’t too surprising. It’s art; you’re not always supposed to get it. Plus, in the world of NFTs, you can truly expect the unexpected.
In response to sale, FTX said it was “history being made” for the “extra rare” piece.
