A group of hackers, who claim to be affiliated with Anonymous, have said they have taken “a decade’s worth of data” from Epik, a controversial web hosting company that has alt-right platforms such as Gab and Parler as part of its clientele.
Epik, which has branded itself as the “swiss bank of domains,” has been known to enable the gathering of alt-right individuals on the internet.
Other companies have chosen to block or prevent such groups from having their websites hosted, but Epik has made its mark by appealing to these people instead. Interestingly, the company did refuse to host a tip site targeting women who went against Texas’ new abortion law.
The recently hack was first reported by Steven Monacelli, who wrote that the attackers got off with over 180GB of data.
The information obtained has “all that’s needed to trace actual ownership and management of the fascist side of the Internet that has eluded researchers, activists, and well, just about everybody,” the hackers said in their first message on 4Chan.
According to Input, the entire collection of data comprises proof of domain purchases and transfers, payment histories (excluding credit card data), account credentials, Git repositories, and the contents of one Epik employee’s inbox.
The attackers have placed the entire torrent online, though Distributed Digital, a company that archives hacked and leaked data, said the trove of information is currently difficult to access. It is currently working on an easily accessible version for researchers and journalists.
As with most leaks, the internet has started speculating on what information will be derived from the 180GB of data stolen. Would it be a run-of-the-mill list of suspects, or will someone prominent surface as being a part of an alt-right hate group? We’ll know soon enough.
