As electric vehicles become more ubiquitous, and more automakers are investing resources into developing the most energy-efficient cars, the ultimate luxury sedan has announced that it, too, is joining the race.
Rolls-Royce revealed the first prototype of its first-ever electric car, which will be called ‘Spectre’, a possible nod to the 2015 Bond film of the same name. In even bigger news, the carmaker said it would also be going all-electric by 2030.
“I am proud to announce that Rolls-Royce is to begin the on-road testing program for an extraordinary new product that will elevate the global all-electric car revolution and create the first — and the finest — super-luxury product of its type,” said the brand’s Chief Executive Officer, Torsten Müller-Ötvös.

Interestingly, according to Electrek, the company’s founder, Charles Rolls, had actually experienced an electric car back in 1900 and was impressed. Rolls had commented, “The electric car is perfectly noiseless and clean. There is no smell or vibration, and they should become very useful when fixed charging stations can be arranged.”
While he had been correct that such vehicles wouldn’t be available “for many years to come,” now, 121 years later, it’s finally becoming a reality.

As of now, much hasn’t been revealed about Spectre, apart from pictures of the prototype, which is camouflaged in a series of slogans, including, “It does not exist, design it.”
Apart from this initial teaser, fans will also be eagerly awaiting to see how the brand changes its combustion engine products to a fully-electric portfolio. Will all its signature models see a major revamp? We’ll just have to wait and see.
The brand has said Spectre will hit the market by the fourth quarter of 2023. To get on the waiting list, head here.
