Burberry’s Surreal Yet Familiar Ad Reminds People Of Dreams They’ve Had

Have you had this dream? Many viewers of Burberry’s latest campaign have.

The fashion house perfectly depicts that dreamlike sensation in a film celebrating the weightless outerwear pioneered by founder Thomas Burberry with the gabardine fabric.

The video starts with a group of friends driving out to the British countryside. They don their Burberry coats, so lightweight that they liberate the group into the sky.

It’s a visual metaphor of a line Mr Burberry wrote in his aptly-titled promotional book Open Spaces: “Inherent in every Burberry garment is freedom.” It’s also the epitome of the freeing feeling one gets when exploring untrodden paths.

Social media users have applauded the execution of the film, describing it as “magical” and “one of the best films of the year.”

The common consensus, though, is that they swear they’ve had dreams like this, resonating with the way Burberry has captured the airy feeling, slight uncertainty, and butterflies in the stomach. Few of those dreams likely involve Burberry coats, but it won’t be a surprise if future ones do.

“That dream sensation of falling and flailing but without fear is something I’d never [thought] I’d see come to life like this,” writes brand designer Ethan Hansen.

“I wish every ad made me feel as much as this one did. Amazing job on making it feel so real and somehow nostalgic,” a viewer on YouTube describes. “This is exactly how I fly in my dreams,” another pens.

Burberry declares in the description: “Today, we continue this journey [of freedom] with a film that blurs the lines between reality and fantasy.”

Dreams, after all, are the intersection of both.

What ever it is you're selling I'll buy it on principal that this ad made me feel like I was 9 again.

It's like the dreams I used to have, when I knew I was dreaming

The motion in this ad hits in places I didn’t know I had. That dream sensation of falling and flailing but without fear is something I’d never though I’d see come to life like this https://t.co/WE56naqlx6

I watched this and thought, rah, this is how I imagined flying/hovering in my dreams for the past 37yrs.
Then read the replies and retweets and realised everyone had the same dreams. https://t.co/QXN7gWgLUG
