Straight out of a classic film involving a scale to the top of a New York skyscraper (you know the one), Hudson Yards’ The Edge is introducing an exhilarating climb experience that promises ascending views of the New York City skyline. Though a few might swear by the age-old mantra used to overcome heights: don’t look.
As it is, the Edge’s reputation as the highest outdoor sky deck in the western hemisphere might daunt many, but thrill-seekers who want that extra boost in adrenaline will soon look no further than City Climb, reported to be the world’s highest building ascent in the open air. The upcoming attraction, opening on November 9, will see guests climbing the outside of the 30 Hudson Yards skyscraper to reach over 1,200 feet above ground.

Granted, you won’t be scaling the entirety of its height. In fact, the experience begins 1,190 feet up, with just 32 steps separating the Basecamp from the Cliff. It gets more thrilling after that; guests will take another 161 steps—at a 45-degree incline—to finally reach the 1,271-foot-high Apex.

Guests will then spend the next 45 minutes dangling from this vantage point to take in the cityscape. The entire experience lasts 90 minutes to two hours, per Architectural Digest.
But above all, safety first. Ahead of the experience, guests will have to attend a thorough briefing, the publication learned from Hudson Yards Experiences’ vice president of marketing Cassie Davidson. Cables connected to a trolley are then used to harness them onto the course. “Climbers are very secure,” Davidson emphasized.

The pinnacle, if not the view, is the destination: Edge’s indoor and outdoor viewing zone, where guests can watch the cityscape from a clear vantage point or toast to their accomplishment with champagne from the bar.
“City Climb quite literally shouts from the rooftops that tourism is back in New York City, and there has never been a more exciting time to visit,” explained Jeff T. Blau, chief executive of Related Companies.
The experience, priced at US$185, comprises footage of the once-in-a-lifetime climb and entry into the Edge. Ticket details can be found here.
