Previously, only users with a verified Instagram account, or at least 10,000 followers, could share links on their Stories. A new link-sharing sticker was later introduced to some users. Now, the social media platform is doing away with the rules, allowing all users to post links in their Instagram Stories.
Starting today, you won’t just see “swipe up for link” on Stories from influencers or celebrities, but family and friends, too.
Plus, everyone will be able to add link stickers to their posts as well, so there’s no longer any need for “check out the link in my bio.” Viewers who tap on the stickers will be automatically redirected to the assigned webpage.
As to why it was rolling out the feature to all users, the site said “over the past year, [it’s] seen how impactful link sharing is to [the] Instagram community.”
It could be trying to set itself up as influencers’ and business owners’ primary choice of community building, especially as Instagram faces increased competition from platforms such as TikTok.
Additionally, according to Gizmodo, in the interests of user safety, the platform explained it would prevent accounts that repeatedly share misinformation or hateful content from accessing link stickers. The rollout could explain why Instagram began confiscating link-sharing privileges from some content creators it claimed, sometimes falsely, “have shared content that violates our Community Guidelines.”
Users who feel they’ve been wrongly banned can appeal the decision here.
