It’s not every day that a commercial lasting just a minute manages to grip the public. Yet, Doritos’ animated film for Día de Los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) has stirred the hearts of viewers far beyond its intended audience in Mexico.
With visuals reminiscent of Pixar’s Coco, the film entitled It’s Never Too Late to Be Who You Are, introduces a family approaching the altar, or ofrenda, of their uncle Alberto. As the members set their food offerings on the ofrenda and pay respects to their relative, he manifests from the afterlife, bringing a companion with him.
This appearance is met with astonishment, of course. There’s the mandatory glimpse of a young relative munching on Doritos, but even she gets stopped in her tracks.
“Who is he?” one of the family members asks. “He’s Mario… my partner,” Alberto responds.
Everyone’s stunned, but this turns into relief when they notice how happy the pair are. “What a miracle! I thought you would be alone forever,” the eldest of the family responds with glee.
The heartwarming advertisement, produced by creative strategy studio Slap Global has racked up more than 5.5 million views as of the time of publication.
“Things I never thought would happen: Me crying over a Doritos ad,” remarks Lyra Hale, news editor at REMEZCLA. “This is amazing. Not what I had on my 2021 bingo card. But oh my god,” comments Texas Public Radio reporter Joey Palacios.
It’s certainly a step up from those bags of LGBTQ+ rainbow chips.
