In the blink of an eye, Monsters, Inc. is now 20 years old. Its plot might still be fresh in your memory, but if you do need a refresher, this four-minute film does the job while presenting it in never-before-seen perspectives.
Disney’s Pixar is famed for producing 3D computer animations, though in its free time, it’s been experimenting with other styles through a fun Pixar Remix YouTube series. Previously, it took on the heartrending Up, and now, the animation studio is honoring one of its earlier CGI films—hot on the heels of the first two Toy Story movies—by aptly going straight to the beginnings of filmmaking and animation.
The latest reimagined short transforms Monsters, Inc. into a silent black-and-white animation akin to Disney’s Steamboat Willie, giving viewers a glimpse of how the 2001 film would look if it were hand-drawn by Walt Disney himself.
Although it’s hard to imagine how the generations before could put up with monochromatic television, your mind and memory amazingly connect the dots. The vintage-esque animation comes complete with chirpy theatrical music and intertitles to also add “color” to the viewing experience.
If there’s anything to nitpick, it’s that there’s some mental dissonance between the era from which the style is inspired and the technology being featured. Sustainable laugh-powered energy in the 1920s? Imagine that!
