Nike is making moves in the metaverse, announcing that it will be teaming up with Roblox to create its very own virtual world, ‘Nikeland’.
The sportswear giant said the online universe, which will replicate the company’s real-life headquarters, will include branded buildings, fields, and arenas for users to compete in mini-games, such as dodgeball and ‘The Floor Is Lava’.
In the long run, Nike hopes that its metaverse will be able to host in-game versions of global sporting events, such as a soccer tournament during the World Cup, or online basketball during the playoffs.
According to CNBC, users with accelerometers in their mobile devices can integrate real-world movements into the game. For example, if you were to jump a few feet in real-life, it could translate into a similar jumping movement within the virtual space.
Of course, as Nike is first and foremost a sportswear brand, users be given a “digital showroom” for them to try on the latest outfits and sneakers. There’s a possibility the company may use avatars to gauge the popularity of upcoming releases, or eventually allow popular users to produce their own pieces.
Sam Poser, an analyst at Williams Trading, told CNBC he felt Nikeland would be successful not only as a way to spread brand awareness, but also as a testing ground for the brand.
“If they know a bunch of kids are wearing it on Nikeland, then they will come out with it in the physical world,” posited Poser.
