London Natural History Museum Dresses T.Rex In Holiday Knits—A Giant Undertaking

In an uproarious piece of good news, London’s Natural History Museum has kept a Tyrannosaurus Rex away from the cold by dressing it up in a custom-fit eco Christmas sweater.
The animatronic dinosaur’s top, commissioned to family-run British Christmas Jumpers, took a team 100 hours to create, and weighs 12 times heavier than a regular sweater, the BBC reports.
It’s a blue, red, and white number with green Christmas trees and silhouettes depicting the Triceratops, Stegosaurus, T.rex, and Diplodocus species. And it’s measured to comfortably tuck in those tiny arms, of course.
The museum chose the business to do the job because its sweaters are produced right in the UK using sustainable recycled yarn and plastic bottles.
Although the firm has manufactured knitwear for the Houses of Parliament and Ed Sheeran, director Snahal Patel says the dinosaur outfit is its most ambitious project yet. “My dad’s never done anything like this and he’s been in this business for 35 to 40 years,” he adds.
Alongside the dinosaur-sized sweater, the museum has prepared sizes wearable by humans for its shop. Similar to their larger counterpart, these knits are eco-friendly, being constructed from 100% recycled materials (60% recycled cotton and 40% recycled polyester). The polyester used in the outerwear also comes from locally recycled plastic bottles.

100% of proceeds from sales of human-sized dinosaur sweaters will be used to support the museum’s upkeep of its exhibits, as well as its research.
Carla Treasure, a buyer and product developer for the Natural History Museum, says the festive display was put up to bring cheer after a difficult year. An idea like this would hopefully “generate interest” and draw visitors back into the museum, the employee adds.
