Burger King Begins Reusable Packaging Test For Popular Menu Items In UK

Fast-food giant Burger King has announced it will be partnering with Loop, a sustainable packaging supplier, to trial reusable packaging for five months in its restaurants located in Ipswich and Newmarket.

From April 26 to September 5, customers at selected restaurants will have the option of paying a £1 (US$1.26) deposit to use a reusable cup or container instead of the chain’s regular single-use packaging. 

At the moment, only 10 products can be used in the sustainable packaging initiative, including crowd favorites Chilli Cheese Bites, the Plant-based Whopper, and Crispy Chicken. 

Once you’re done with your meal, simply scan the barcode on the cup or container with the Loop app before returning it to designated bins outside the same Burger King restaurants or at other locations available on the app.

Simple? You’ll then be refunded your deposit, before the reusable packaging is professionally cleaned using a state-of-the-art system that sanitizes each item before its put back into the “loop” for other customers to use. 

Tom Szaky, founder of TerraCycle and Loop, said that as consumers reach for more sustainable options, the response to this trial program could “inform future plans” for longer-term schemes surrounding reusable packaging.
