This Remote Island Is Seeking Designs For A Sustainable Beacon
By Alexa Heah, 11 May 2022

Vermont-based footwear brand Merrell is calling UK architects, engineers, artists, and designers to participate in The Beacon Project, a creative quest to come up with a temporary structure for a remote island that will not only complement the natural surroundings but also provide a “peaceful haven away from the stresses and strains of modern life.”
The challenge, which allows one free entry per participant, is accepting submissions from now till June 30, 2022. Designers are tasked with crafting a simple design layout or sketch of the proposed concept, within the confines of the 3 x 3 x 3-meter (10 x 10 x 10-foot) measurements for the beacon.
Designers have to ensure that the construction costs of the building do not exceed £5,000 (US$6,100), with a key focus on using renewable and sustainable materials.
According to HYPEBEAST, the brand hopes the project will “inspire adventure” and bring to the fore the benefits of experiencing the great outdoors, and is looking for creative, unique designs to pay homage to a “peaceful and beautiful island.”
The final winner will walk away with £1,000 (US$1,200) and the opportunity to participate in the development of the actual beacon. Head here to find out more.
