Stepping onto a bag of M&M’s near you is ‘Purple’, a confident and quirky female peanut chocolate piece.
Purple is the first character formally introduced into the pre-existing group of candy-coated chocolates in the last decade. According to Mars, the vibrant addition encourages acceptance, authenticity, and inclusivity to the pack.
Purple M&M’s were first introduced in 2002 after the color won a poll put out by Mars. However, it was only ever for a limited time. Since then, the hue has yet to return to candy bags, and people have often wondered why the company never fully committed to adding it to its lineup.
According to CNN, Purple is joining the entourage as a character more than candy. As per the brand’s global vice president Jane Hwang, the new mascot will be seen across branding and limited-edition packaging but, surprisingly, not in a bag of M&M’s.
Regardless, she was honored with a fun song titled I’m Just Gonna Be Me to mark her entrance. The company notes that this is her first single and video as she uses music to capture the hearts of fans everywhere.
The video sees Purple preparing to make her world debut in her dressing room. As with any newbie with impostor syndrome, she questions if she is worthy of joining the colorful clique as the newest “spokescandy.” Eventually, she hits the stage and belts her heart out.
The song is being hosted on Spotify and Apple Music, and for every stream, Mars will be donating US$1—up to US$500,000—to Sing For Hope, a nonprofit that brings music and art to people around the world to promote equality in creative spaces.
