Lexus Reimagines Dorothy’s Red Slippers As Magical ‘Shoes’ For SUV
By Nicole Rodrigues, 17 Oct 2022
Lexus is sending its RX SUV down the yellow brick road, and it’s even fitted it with glimmering new ruby-red wheel covers.
The ‘Ruby Red Rims’ were designed by Harris Reed, who transformed the iconic slippers from The Wizard of Oz into a four-piece set fit for wheels. The pop culture-rich treatment was carried out under license from Warner Bros. Consumer Products.
Taking inspiration from his own Spring 2023 fashion collection, Reed created a set of rims made from solid aluminum with red gloss-sealed glitter, and a matching Lexus gem-shaped logo sitting on top of it.
The release of the wheel covers, first showcased at W Magazine’s 50th-anniversary party in New York, is accompanied by a campaign spot that embodies themes from The Wizard of Oz to extol the new Lexus RX SUV as the vehicle to take you on the road less traveled.
The designer describes that he wanted to portray driver’s journey in a literal manner, so the next logical step was to equip the car with Dorothy’s famous shoes and give them control over their own personal yellow brick road.
There is no word if you can buy the shiny wheel covers yet, though the company expects to conjure them up in various appearances over the course of this year and the next.
