While you may know of Dyson for its famed vacuum cleaners and air purifiers, the company will soon be stepping into the audio market, with a forthcoming pair of headphones that aren’t just noise-canceling, but can purify the air on the go as well.
Dubbed The DysonZone, the device doesn’t just come with the usual over-the-ear pods, but it also incorporates a magnetically-attached mask that sits directly over the wearer’s mouth, blowing in two streams of purified air at once.
Following five years of research and development, the brand has come up with technology that captures 99% of particle pollution—even as small as 0.1 microns—with the addition of potassium-enriched carbon filters to target polluting gases.
The gadget is aimed at consumers who live in bustling cities, which the firm claims will include seven in 10 people come 2050. As urban populations grow and pollution increases, the Dyson Zone tackles both city noise and dirty air at once.
Purification filters are expected to last an estimated 12 months, after which the headphones’ accompanying application will signal a reminder to get them swapped out.
According to the brand, the headphones offer up to 50 hours of audio-only playback, but will only last four hours if you combine both the audio and purification systems.
In terms of sound engineering, the headphones boast “high fidelity, immersive audio” comprising ultra-low distortion, and a wide frequency range so wearers can enjoy bass, mids, and highs.
There’s even an additional microphone so you can take calls on the go or speak to your virtual assistant, complete with “beamforming” technology to enhance the clarity of your voice while reducing sounds from the environment.
Intrigued? The DysonZone will be available for pre-order in the United States in March 2023, by appointment only, before it launches publicly shortly after. Prices start from US$949.
