Last week, M&M’s threw everyone into a tizzy when it announced that its quintessential ‘spokescandies’ would be taking an indefinite pause from PR duties, thanks to the internet’s relentless witch hunt heightened by the switch of Green’s Go-Go boots.
The stunt was astonishing to many, but with the Super Bowl looming overhead, it may not have been as bizarre as once thought.
In recent news, the candy company is taking things one step further and rebranding its name to ‘Ma&Ya’s’, in honor of new spokesperson Maya Rudolph. The comedian is filling in the shoes of the candy mascots while they remain on hiatus.
In a spot shared by Rudolph, the new M&M’s spokesperson is seated at a desk and holding up the transformed bag with her face on it. The revamp is now on shelves, and you can snag a bag for US$4.99.
The website and social media channels have changed to accommodate the new name. The brand does do a convincing job of “rebranding” itself, but according to Elite Daily, a spokesperson from M&M’s noted in an email that all would be revealed on February 12.
Some fans speculate that the characters could be banding together to earn their rightful place as faces of the company back from Rudolph come the Super Bowl weekend.
Me trying to prove the M&Ms are in fact NOT retired and are in other media and this is all a stunt where they will bring them all back together for the superbowl or something pic.twitter.com/i7BShcxq1n
