Content creators and global brands will now be able to reach out to their fans more intimately and keep them in the loop in between launches, as Instagram recently has rolled out ‘Broadcast Channels’ via its Messenger platform.
Similar to a feature in the messaging application Telegram, these channels pose as casual, quick ways to engage with followers, with the option of posting text, pictures, videos, or even voice notes for behind-the-scenes moments or to gather real-time fan feedback.
Unlike a typical chatroom, this one-to-many broadcast function ensures followers won’t flood the creators or businesses with messages, and will only be limited to replying through polls and reactions.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been the first to test out the new feature, creating a ‘Meta Channel’ to update followers on upcoming projects the company is working on. Going forward, Instagram plans to expand the function with collaboration channels or even a question-and-answer segment.
At the moment, the broadcast tool has yet to reach all users. Once a creator is granted access, they can start a channel right from their Instagram inbox. Followers will receive a notification to join their channel once the first message has been posted.
A handful of United States-based creators will be the first to trial the channels, though creators who are interested in getting in on the action early can register their interest here on the waitlist, with limited slots available.
