Psyching yourself up to get ready for a first date can be extremely nerve-wracking—you’ll overthink what to wear, say, and even what to order make a good first impression. Well, why not skip the jitters and send your digital self to do all the smooth-talking instead?
Snack is a new-age dating app that markets itself as “not your parent’s dating app,” effectively rendering everyone who uses Tinder as old. Despite this, it is offering a new way to look for love. First off, instead of swiping through photos and reading profiles, Snack has adopted a TikTok style of scrolling through someone’s profile with pictures and videos of them ready for you to determine if they’re your soulmate. It also has prompts laced with Gen-Z lingo, such as “tell us how tall you are without telling us how tall you are.”
The app first launched in 2021 and catered to a new generation of youths seeking a companion. In 2022, it added a new update that “punished” people for ghosting others too often by making their profiles invisible, a commendable feature in hindsight.
Snack’s newest feature takes online dating into the realm of artificial intelligence by adding a virtual ‘wingperson’. This is essentially your digital counterpart who will be sent out into the dating world on your behalf. If it finds someone it thinks is right for you, it will start a real-life conversation for both of you on the app.
As wildly science-fiction-like as this sounds, the feature does dampen the nerves of sifting through profiles and trying to start a conversation. It also widens your search to people you might have swiped left on just because a photo of theirs or something they said in their bio gave you the proverbial “ick.”
That being said, your wing person will have to be trained to be the best representative of you before you send it out. You can do this by telling your avatar things about yourself that you want others to know. According to Fast Company, Snack would also eventually want people to take the first steps of a relationship in the metaverse.
From an innovation standpoint, that might seem like a great niche for the app to carve out among the endless stream of online dating options. However, in terms of how real-life people would perceive this, is anyone ready to take that step in fully transitioning their love life online?
If you are eager to try it out for yourself, Snack is available on the iOS store.
