A mayonnaisejar is about to tell you whether or not your fridge is cold enough. Thought up by Hellmann’s, this condiments jar isn’t just a choice addition to your sandwich but also a good indicator to let you know if other food in your refrigerator is going to waste.
The temperature-sensitive labels were made alongside advertising agency Ogilvy and designed by the contemporary applied arts firm Jacky Winter Group and artist Ellen Porteus. Hellmann’s, which is also working with WRAP, a public safety technologies and services company fighting climate change and food waste, helped bring the venture about.
A type of thermochromic ink was used when creating the labels, which allow them to display different designs at various temperatures. So if your fridge is cold enough, you will see all the colorful art.
The new packaging highlights that many households keep refrigerators too warm. In doing so, a lot of food such as milk, fruits, and vegetables can go bad quickly when they could last for three more days if kept below 5°C or 41°F.
According toThe Northern Echo, Catherine David, Director of Collaboration and Change at WRAP, notes that 4.5 million tonnes of good food go to waste yearly. And with the cost of living, the brands posit that customers would also be doing themselves a favor by lowering the temperatures in their fridges.
