ChatGPT, which boasts about 100 million monthly active users, can now add President Joe Biden to the long line of people it has chatted with.
According to a report by Axios, Biden tried out the language-processing model and was “fascinated” by the technology.
The news comes as Biden’s administration, including Vice President Kamala Harris, met up with some of the leaders that are spearheading artificial intelligence and technology, including the CEOs of Microsoft, Alphabet, and OpenAI.
There, they spoke about possible effects of AI and how to overcome its safety risks, as well as outlined the need for transparency about how those products and services are built.
At present, the US has no clear-cut AI laws but that may change. Last year, White House officials drafted an AI Bill of Rights to push tech companies to protect users when they roll out AI tools.
At a press briefing on Thursday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre shared tht Biden has been “extensively briefed” on generative AI programs like ChatGPT and is aware of how they work. However, she did not hear what Biden had asked the chatbot or his thoughts on the rapidly-adopted tool.
Jean-Pierre revealed that both Biden and Harris view AI as “one of the most powerful technologies of our time.”
The meeting follows up on a discussion Biden held with his council of advisors last month, where he stressed that tech companies need to “make sure their products are safe before making them public.”
Biden cautioned then: “AI can help deal with some very difficult challenges like disease and climate change, but it also has to address the potential risks to our society, to our economy, to our national security.”
