UK gambling support network GambleAware has partnered with creative agency Lucky Generals to set up a first-of-its-kind “crushed” billboard in London, just outside the home of soccer club Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
Ahead of the final games of the Premier League season, when sports betting could potentially get more rampant, the eye-catching display wants to remind those struggling with a gambling habit to seek help.
“It felt like gambling was crushing me until I talked to someone,” the billboard reads. With a reassuring subtext that says: “If you’re worried about how gambling makes you feel, we can help.”
The decision to place the unique billboard outside the Emirates Stadium in North London was backed by statistics. Data from the organization suggests that residents in the capital are twice as likely to experience problem gambling when compared to the rest of Great Britain.
In addition, to highlight how problem gambling can affect an individual’s mental health, GambleAware has placed beer mats in pubs surrounding the stadium to spark conversations about the harms of the habit in environments where the topic is typically discussed.
GambleAware Chief Communications Officer Alexia Clifford explained that the negative effects caused by gambling are often “hidden and complex in nature.” As such, it’s important to encourage those plagued by the issue to overcome the shame and open up to someone.
