Those familiar with artificial intelligence (AI) text-to-image generators would have heard of Stable Diffusion, a popular tool created by Stability AI. Recently, the company announced it will be releasing an open-source version of its commercial design suite, DreamStudio.
The new launch, dubbed StableStudio, “marks a fresh chapter” for imaging technology, with the company explaining it believes the best way to expand upon its research is through “open, community-driven development rather than a private iteration of a closed-source product.”
When DreamStudio was first developed, it was designed as an animation studio for users of Disco Diffusion, a separate open-source generative AI art model. It was then integrated with Stable Diffusion when the service launched last year.
It appears Stability AI has only made minor tweaks to StableStudio. Unlike DreamStudio, the software lacks any of its predecessor’s branding or Stability-specific features, including billing and API management. These have been replaced by a plug-in system instead.
Going forward, the firm plans to expand StableStudio’s user interface by including a chat function within the project. DreamStudio will remain as its Stability-hosted toolkit and stay up to date with the newer iteration “whenever possible.”
“Our goal of creating a great multi-modal experience for generative AI has endured… The release of StableStudio reiterates Stability AI’s commitment to open-source and transparency. We’re eager to see what the community will create.”
