In an effort to combat food waste and its detrimental impact on the environment, Makro and advertising agency Grey Colombia have introduced a set of ingenious stickers. Shockingly, about 40% of this waste consists of fruits and vegetables, as reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Consumers often avoid ripened fruits, assuming they are no longer fit for consumption. However, this is not always the case, as the stickers aim to illustrate. They not only educate customers on how to utilize fruits and vegetables at various stages of ripeness but also promote mindful shopping by encouraging individuals to choose produce that aligns with their needs.
These innovative stickers can be found on bananas, mangoes, papayas, avocados, and tomatoes. Each sticker features a central hole surrounded by a gradient of colors, representing different degrees of ripeness and suggesting various culinary possibilities. For instance, a banana sticker might list options like “fried, ice cream, tempura, cupcake,” depending on the fruit’s color matching the corresponding hue. Similarly, for mangoes, they might suggest “lemonade, ceviche chili, cocktail.”
While these suggestions are not strict rules, they are practical guides, inspiring people to embrace ripe fruits and transform them into delightful milkshakes, sauces, or salads.
By employing these smart stickers, Makro and Grey Colombia hope to reduce food waste, empower consumers to make informed choices, and foster creativity in the kitchen.
