AI Camera Placed On Your Ear Effortlessly Counts Your Calories
By Nicole Rodrigues, 15 Jun 2023
Counting calories is widely recognized as an effective method for weight loss. However, it can be time-consuming, tedious, and a hassle to meticulously track even the simplest things like a cup of tea.
With the integration of artificial intelligence into various aspects of our lives, it was only a matter of time before it aimed to assist in shedding excess pounds.
Imperial College London has introduced an innovative project called ‘CoDiet’, which involves attaching an AI camera to the ear, acting as a “third eye” to monitor your daily food consumption. This project also seeks to address the limitations of diet research, as participants often struggle to document their meals and estimate portion sizes accurately. Moreover, individuals naturally feel inclined to omit guilt-inducing treats or alcoholic beverages from their records.
The camera, about the size of a hearing aid, is positioned on the top of the ear to scan your food. The captured data is then processed by an AI system, which evaluates the digestion of microbes and metabolites in urine. Additionally, the technology can determine personalized portion sizes for each individual.

Don’t worry, this isn’t like Big Brother sitting watch over you. The cameras are currently contained to a trial where 50 people in Britain and 150 in Cork, Republic of Ireland, are being tested. Furthermore, volunteers from Spain and Greece are also contributing to the project.
Who knows? Maybe one day, AI will be the secret weapon to shed those pounds, all thanks to a nifty little camera hanging out on your ear.
