While we can’t be human cyborgs with internal cooling systems just yet, there are a few high-tech ways that have been developed over the years to help people beat the heat. From tiny air-conditioning units you attach to your clothes to self-cooling tents, such inventions make day-to-day life a bit more comfortable in the blazing outdoors.

Tokyo-based gadget innovator Gloture now has one more solution that feels as cool as it sounds. ‘WearCool’ is a wearable air conditioner designed to provide a refreshing breeze wherever you go. It’s attached to your waist, like a belt.

At the heart of WearCool lies a powerful fan that rotates at an impressive speed of 5500 revolutions per minute and generates a maximum airflow of five meters (16.4 feet) per second, creating a powerful gust of cooling wind, and funneling it upwards, that can swiftly lower your body temperature.

All this is distributed via five air outlets smartly placed throughout the device for an all-around breeze.

According to SoraNews24, the belt’s casing features heat-absorbing phase-change material (PCM), ensuring not only a comfortable fit but also effective cooling of the areas in contact with your body. With its 5000mAh battery, the gadget boasts 17 hours of nonstop use on a single charge.

The unisex gadget has a highly stretchable waistband that can be easily adjusted to fit your body shape and size, widening from anywhere between 27.6 to 41.3 inches. It’s also fairly light, weighing just 488 grams (17.2 ounces), so you’ll barely notice it during your walks.

Controlling WearCool is a literal breeze with the help of its dedicated app. Through the digital assistant—which has Japanese and English interfaces—users can effortlessly adjust various settings, including the direction of the airflow, and choose from three different fan speeds.

Notably, the device is also protected in PCBA nano-coating, which makes it water-repellent, durable, and resistant to wear and dirt, allowing it to withstand the rigors of daily use.

WearCool’s arrival comes just as Japan is enduring “mercilessly hot” weather, with temperatures expected to climb up to 100.4°F in Tokyo, per the report. The nation isn’t alone in this plight; several parts of the world are suffering intense heatwaves too. In the US, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) estimates that temperatures between July 17 and 21 could surpass 103°F in the north-central and south-central weather zones.

Hopefully, we’ll see more on-the-go cooling technology like this one roll out in the coming days. While they won’t be long-term solutions for climate change, they’ll help commuters keep the heat under their belt for the time being.

WearCool is now available on Gloture’s online store for a cool, cool price of ¥32,500 (US$235).
