A forthcoming Tesla Supercharger station will take a trip down Hollywood history, before making a detour for the future. Elon Musk’s plans to build a 50s diner-style kiosk has officially been greenlit by the city of Los Angeles, according to documents seen by Teslarati.
When completed, the retro station—poised to be constructed at 7001 W. Santa Monica Boulevard—will be two stories tall. It will house a diner with “roof deck level seating,” along with 32 supercharging outlets.
And if you think you’ll be doom-scrolling through Musk’s “everything” app, X, while your drive gets juiced up, you’ve got another thing coming. The Supercharger station will also be home to a drive-in movie theater, which Musk had teased some years back.
Architectural studio Stantec has been enlisted to oversee the design, while PCL has been named as the one to be in charge of construction. The proposal was approved by the LA Department of Building and Safety on July 18.
Tesla’s old-school “Diner and Drive-In Movie Supercharger,” which is what the project is entitled inside the automaker’s paperwork, will include two separate movie screens that will run iconic scenes from Hollywood history, Musk previously noted.
Plans to take a retrofuturistic concept to the road have been swirling about for half a decade, with Musk stating he wanted to build a “roller skates and rock restaurant” back in 2018.
If you’re curious as to what the charging station could look like, architectural modeler Edward Howard has dreamed up some fun conceptual renderings to get you fueled for the future.
With that said, it’s unclear when Tesla will finally build this unconventional non-gas station, since the city has only just given the company its stamp of approval.
