Amid the hustle and bustle of the modern workplace, taking a nap during office hours might seem unconventional. However, in Japan, not only is napping in public spaces socially accepted, but it’s also encouraged as a means of rejuvenation. Enter Giraffenap, a pod-like structure designed to cater to the needs of office workers seeking a brief, upright snooze (like a giraffe, if you haven’t put two and two together already).

Available in two models, Spacia and Forest, these pods are reminiscent of a classic public phone booth, providing a compact and private space for a power nap. The Spacia, standing slightly taller at approximately 8.43 feet, boasts dimensions of nearly 3.94 feet in width and depth, while the Forest measures about 8.3 feet in height.

It supports the head, buttocks, shins, and soles of the feet, ensuring a comfortable place to rest your weight on. Research done in collaboration with Hokkaido University and Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University indicates that sleeping upright within the pod can reach sleep stage two, enabling a refreshing nap without the disorientation often associated with short slumbers.

The pads and seat height are adjustable to accommodate various body types, and there are options for customizable lighting and convenient USB ports for device charging, ventilation fans, air purifiers, and a fire extinguishing system.

If you want to try out the Giraffenap, you’ll have to wait until December 2023 or January 2024, when the Spacia and Forest models will be released in Japan. It’s still unclear when they’ll be available globally.
