OpenAI Announces A Checker That’s ‘99% Reliable’ In Detecting AI-Generated Pics

OpenAI, one of the central forces in the world of AI-generated content, is working on a new tool to help users suss out synthetic imagery.


During an interview at the Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference, the company’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, revealed that the firm is currently testing a program designed to identify DALL-E images, claiming that it’s “99% reliable.”

One criteria is to ensure the tool doesn’t make users “feel monitored,” Murati noted.


While OpenAI is at the forefront of this effort, it is not the first. Tools like AI or Not have been around for a while to help people distinguish AI-generated images from real ones. However, no tool can claim to be bulletproof. In the case of AI or Not, it recently misclassified an image of the Israel-Hamas war that turned out to be an actual photograph, PetaPixel reports.


The organization has not provided a specific timeline for the release of their new tool, but it represents a significant step in addressing the challenges posed by AI-generated images in today’s digital landscape.
