Studio Ghibli films strike a chord because the creators understand how to carefully light up multiple senses. The movies aren’t just aesthetic treasures, but they also transport you to Hayao Miyazaki’s animated world through emotional scores. Coupled with slow, mindful scenes that connect you with their scenery, the films truly make you feel like you’re stepping into the shoes of the characters at times.
Previously believed to be Miyazaki’s final film before he renounced his retirement again, The Boy and the Heron has scooped up some attention for deliberately being scant with its promotional materials. Now, as the project heads for an international release, audiences are being treated to more early glimpses. Besides the trailer, there’s now a music video featuring extra snippets of the forthcoming animation.
The Boy and the Heron, adapted from Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 novel How Do You Live?, will be a heart-wrenching tale about coping with grief. Set in World War II, it follows a boy, Mahito Maki, who loses his mother during a bombing. One day, he follows a heron and ends up in a world where the dead and the living co-exist.
The story’s heavier themes are hinted at in a video for Kenshi Yonezu’s new emotive single, Spinning Globe.
Elsewhere, Studio Ghibli has announced an A-list voice cast for the movie’s English-language release, including big names like Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, and Gemma Chan.
